White Tea and Ginger Soap

Our White Tea and Ginger soap is very delicate with a slight spiciness to it. There is a lovely clean freshness to this soap.

White tea is a lightly oxidized tea grown and harvested almost exclusively in China, primarily in the Fujian province. White tea comes from the delicate buds and younger leaves of the Chinese Camellia sinensis plant. These buds and leaves are allowed to wither in natural sunlight before they are lightly processed to prevent oxidation or further fermentation. This preserves the characteristic flavor of the white tea.

The name "white tea" derives from the fine silvery-white hairs on the unopened buds of the tea plant, which gives the plant a whitish appearance.

Ginger has been used since the 1500’s for medicinal purposes. It is a rhizome that is native to South Asia. Ginger has a warm spicy woody fragrance. It has natural anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger essential oil may help stimulate the circulation due to its warming effect, it also is a natural anti-oxidant.

A Bar of Soap from Beginning to End

You know that nice bar of soap you have in your shower? Have you ever thought about how it is made and what it takes to make it?

When I make a batch of soap a lot of steps are required to make the finished product. First I need to decide what type of soap to make such as hemp seed oil, coco butter or even Shea butter, there are many choices. Next I have to figure out what fragrance the soap should be, and then the color needs to be chosen. After that, the shape of the soap needs to be considered. Finally I get to make the soap which also takes some time. Then the clean up needs to be done and the soap is prepared for wrapping.

When the soap is finished a label needs to be designed, the soap needs to be wrapped and then boxed and labeled. When that is finished I need to take a photo of the soap so it can be put on the website to be sold. A page for the website needs to be written, the essential oils and ingredients need to be researched so the proper information is on the web page. Then the last step, the page for the soap gets loaded onto the website.

It can take one to two days to complete a batch of soap from beginning to end. It is a lot of steps to make a really nice bar of soap, but I really enjoy making soap so every step is worth it. Be good to yourself and the planet use natural soaps.

Detergents are for dishes and laundry, not for your skin.

Detergents don’t belong on your skin, and they should not be in your soap. Detergents usually are harsh; they are a chemical compound or a mixture of compounds used as a cleaning agent. Detergents are used in everyday products such as personal hygiene, dish washing and laundry. Many commercial mass produced soaps are made with synthetic detergents, chemicals or artificial ingredients which can irritate skin and cause skin problems.

Some people are not sure of the difference between soaps and detergents. They both are made with surfactants which means they are washing compounds that when mixed with water will remove dirt and grease. Soaps are made of natural ingredients found in nature. A true soap will have saponified oils listed in the ingredients. Natural Soap is non-drying and good for your skin. Detergents are synthetic and made with artificial ingredients. They have preservatives and fillers in them. Detergents are drying and irritating. Most commercial bath soap is not really soap, they are called “bath bars” or “beauty bars”, and they are not made with saponified oils. Numerous commercial “soaps” contain sodium tallowate which is beef fat and sodium hydroxide. Sodium tallowate clogs pores and creates skin problems.

Here is a list of common ingredients used in commercially produced “soaps” or bath bars.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (or SELS) is a foaming agent that does nothing but create lather. This chemical and its cousin sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) are found in most brands of cosmetics and household cleaners. SELS and SLS are known to dry and irritate skin and hair in products containing a little more than a percent or two of this chemical

Sodium Sulfate – an industrial filler material

Cocamidopropyl Betaine – a thickening agent that can also reduce irritation caused by chemicals like SELS

Disodium EDTA – this chemical binds to impurities in water so detergents can clean more effectively

Sodium Tallowate - made from animal fat (tallow) besides being an animal product, tallow has been known to clog pores and aggravate eczema for those individuals with sensitive skin.

Pentasodium Pentetate is a chelating agent used in cosmetics and beauty products prevent

Various mineral components from binding together and negatively affecting the formulation. It is the salt of Pentetic Acid, and is a compound that binds metal and inactivates metallic ions, such as calcium and magnesium, to help maintain the stability and appearance of cosmetic product

Pentaerythrityl tetra-di-t-butyl hydroxyhydrocinnamate is an antioxidant that inhibits reactions promoted by oxygen that could cause the unsaturated fats in the soap to become rancid.

Tallow acid, or tallow fatty acid, is a type of fatty acid naturally derived from animal fat.

The difference between Handcrafted natural soap and commercial produced “soap” or “Bath bars” is clear, the commercial soap is mass produced and made with inexpensive ingredients that irritate skin and dry it out. Handcrafted natural soap is made in small batches with premium ingredients, it nourishes your skin and moisturizes as well. It also smells great.

So which soap would you rather use? I choose the natural soap any day. Be good to your skin and use natural soaps.

Confessions of a soap-a-holic and how it all got started.

I never knew what I was missing until I started making handcrafted soap. I used to think soap was just soap, it was something to wash with and that was that. Then one day when I was working for a fair trade company I was chatting with one of my friends there and we started talking about what we would do if we could do anything we wanted. My friend Dawn said she wanted to make handmade soap. I said “you can make your own soap?!?” I had never given that any thought, I didn’t know you could make your own soap. Wow that got my head spinning in all sorts of directions. So I asked her a million questions about making soap. I could not stop thinking about making my own soap.

I used to buy my soap from the grocery store or drug store. It’s cheap as can be and you get several bars. Well after talking with my friend Dawn, I started reading ingredients on the soaps in the grocery store. Yuck! I could not pronounce half of the ingredients and the other half of ingredients I had no idea what they were. So that sent me into research mode. I am the queen of research, I love to look stuff up and find all I can on the subject. I checked out all of the ingredients in the soaps from the grocery store. Boy was I grossed out after reading all of that. I started thinking I can’t believe I have been putting this junk on my skin for years.

So of course I just had to research the best things to put into soap. I found that soap does not have to be made with cheap or harsh ingredients, or with ingredients that you couldn’t pronounce. It could be made with wonderful nourishing oils, butters and essential oils that make your skin really healthy. I had dry skin and eczema and I thought I was just going to have to live with it. My son also had skin problems. We went to the doctor’s and got lots of medications that never really helped.

Well I started making my own soap. It was quite the experiment at first. I made a lot of really bad soap. They looked horrible and didn’t smell nice. But practice makes perfect. I finally started making very nice soaps that actually made a huge difference in my skin and my son’s skin. So I thought I would share this with my friends. Well they were not that interested at first. They said soap is just soap what’s the big deal! Well I wasn’t going to take that lying down. So I explained to them about the ingredients in the soaps they were using, for example: most large soap manufactures use beef fat in their soaps. They were not happy to hear this, but still not that interested in my soap. Geez, what was I going to do with all of that soap I made. So I decided to give all of my friends some soap as a gift. Well that really changed their minds. They used my soap and became hooked on the good stuff. They discovered how lovely the lather was and how soft their skin was, and that they no longer needed to use lotion, and they smelled really nice after their showers. Now they can’t seem to get enough and could not imagine ever using the soaps from the grocery store ever again.

I must confess that I am totally hooked too. It is so fun to try a new soap fragrance or a new soap blend. Sometimes I have several soaps in the shower and a different one in every bathroom and at the kitchen sink. Sometime I wash my hands just so I can play with the soap and feel the great lather. Ok I admit that I am a soap-a-holic, I just can’t help myself, and there is something very nice about a great handmade natural soap.

Come on, ditch the grocery store and drug store soap and buy handmade natural soaps. You will be so glad you did. Be good to yourself and the planet, use natural soaps.

This past year has been a roller coaster. I wasn’t sure if I would still have my soap business. The beginning of last year did not look so good, the economy was killing us. I am happy to say that things have gotten better.

I continued to work on the social networking on Merchant Circle, Face Book, and Indie Public, and it finally started to pay off. I have met some wonderful people who I have made friends with and learned so much from. Business has increased from all of the networking that I did, and on top of that I learned so many techniques to promote the company.

I now have a YouTube channel for my soaps. I was not too sure about doing a YouTube channel. I really hate being in front of the camera. and it was quite the challenge figuring it all out. I am so glad I did it. Having a YouTube channel has helped get the word out about my soaps and along the way I have met some really cool beauty gurus that really know their stuff. We have received many requests to review our soaps from YouTube which turned out to be another great way to spread the word about our soaps.

There are so many channels that did reviews that we could only put up a few links.

I have been working on a lot of new products lately. I now have a doggie wash, facial scrub, mud mask bath salts, body glitter and foot soaps. I have also redesigned our sugar scrubs and bath fizzies. There are lots of new products in the plans, I can’t wait to work on them. I really enjoy experimenting with new products.

Cupertino Soap Company soap should come with a warning: "May increase water consumption". Once you use the soap the "lather rinse repeat" really isn't a suggestion any longer - it is a must! Your showers last much longer than anticipated because you lose track of time...the soap really is that good!

Confessions of a soap-a-holic and how it all started

I never knew what I was missing until I started making handcrafted soap. I used to think soap was just soap, it was something to wash with and that was that. Then one day when I was working for a fair trade company I was chatting with one of my friends there and we started talking about what we would do if we could do anything we wanted. My friend Dawn said she wanted to make handmade soap. I said “you can make your own soap?!?” I had never given that any thought, I didn’t know you could make your own soap. Wow that got my head spinning in all sorts of directions. So I asked her a million questions about making soap. I could not stop thinking about making my own soap.
I used to buy my soap from the grocery store or drug store. It’s cheap as can be and you get several bars. Well after talking with my friend Dawn, I started reading ingredients on the soaps in the grocery store. Yuck! I could not pronounce half of the ingredients and the other half of ingredients I had no idea what they were. So that sent me into research mode. I am the queen of research, I love to look stuff up and find all I can on the subject. I checked out all of the ingredients in the soaps from the grocery store. Boy was I grossed out after reading all of that. I started thinking I can’t believe I have been putting this junk on my skin for years.
So of course I just had to research the best things to put into soap. I found that soap does not have to be made with cheap or harsh ingredients, or with ingredients that you couldn’t pronounce. It could be made with wonderful nourishing oils, butters and essential oils that make your skin really healthy. I had dry skin and eczema and I thought I was just going to have to live with it. My son also had skin problems. We went to the doctor’s and got lots of medications that never really helped.
Well I started making my own soap. It was quite the experiment at first. I made a lot of really bad soap. They looked horrible and didn’t smell nice. But practice makes perfect. I finally started making very nice soaps that actually made a huge difference in my skin and my son’s skin. So I thought I would share this with my friends. Well they were not that interested at first. They said soap is just soap what’s the big deal! Well I wasn’t going to take that lying down. So I explained to them about the ingredients in the soaps they were using, for example: most large soap manufactures use beef fat in their soaps. They were not happy to hear this, but still not that interested in my soap. Geez, what was I going to do with all of that soap I made. So I decided to give all of my friends some soap as a gift. Well that really changed their minds. They used my soap and became hooked on the good stuff. They discovered how lovely the lather was and how soft their skin was, and that they no longer needed to use lotion, and they smelled really nice after their showers. Now they can’t seem to get enough and could not imagine ever using the soaps from the grocery store ever again.
I must confess that I am totally hooked too. It is so fun to try a new soap fragrance or a new soap blend. Sometimes I have several soaps in the shower and a different one in every bathroom and at the kitchen sink. Sometime I wash my hands just so I can play with the soap and feel the great lather. Ok I admit that I am a soap-a-holic, I just can’t help myself, and there is something very nice about a great handmade natural soap.
Come on, ditch the grocery store and drug store soap and buy handmade natural soaps. You will be so glad you did. Be good to yourself and the planet, use natural soaps.

Citrus Sunrise Soap

If a sunrise had a fragrance it would smell like our sunrise citrus soap. It contains essential oils of lemon, grapefruit and orange. It is like sunshine in a bar of soap. This soap has happy and refreshing aroma. The shea butter and olive oil give this soap wonderful moisturizing properties.

Lavender is an evergreen woody shrub that is native to France and the Western Mediterranean. Lavender is very aromatic, herbaceous, woody and slightly sweet. The whole plant can be used. There are many types of Lavender but the best for aromatherapy and healing is Lavandula Angustifolia also known as English Lavender. The plant is steam distilled to extract the essential oil.
Lavender essential oil has wonderful healing properties for the skin and body. It helps relieve itchy skin and acne. Lavender essential oil has natural antibacterial and antidepressant properties. The essential oil works wonders on bug bites. Just rub a dab on the bug bite and the itch and pain is gone. I always take Lavender essential oil when we go camping.
A cup of Lavender tea is very soothing and is wonderful after a stressful day, it really helps you unwind and relax. It is a staple in my tea cabinet, I couldn’t do without it. Lavender essential oil is a great headache reliever also. You can rub a small amount on your forehead to make your nasty headache go away. (Always test on a small patch of skin first to be sure it does not irritate your skin.) If you are having difficulty sleeping a cup of Lavender tea will send you off to dream land in no time. If you have tummy troubles Lavender tea does a great job of making your tummy feel better. Lavender’s aromatherapy benefits are calming, relaxing, reviving and balancing. This is one powerful herb.
We love Lavender so much because it has so much to offer that is why we use it in our soaps. Our lavender soap is so calming and stress reducing. We have added dried lavender buds to our soap to round out the fragrance and provide gentle exfoliation. The fragrance of this soap is so lovely, the lavender really comes through.

Going Green

We have been working hard to be green. We are now using boxes that are made from recycled paper. They look great and what's even better is they can be recycled. We pack our soaps in boxes to protect them during the shipping process and while they are on display at shows. We didn't want to add to the waste that is already in the landfills, so we were overjoyed when we found these boxes.
Our next step was to eliminate the plastic wrapping that the soap is wrapped in. For quite some time there were no alternatives. We found a biodegradeable shrink wrap! We were so happy to find this shrink wrap. The shrink wrap decomposes in a two step cycle, taking approximately 20-36 months for the process to complete. Wind, heat, moisture and UV light break it down, returning the film to the biocycle after naturally occurring micro organisims reduce it to a biomass. We found this fantastic product at Nationl Shrinkwrap. Another big plus is the film still lets the scent of the soap come through, it also makes the soap look wonderful. Now we don't have to worry about plastic wrap that is not biodegradeable. We will be putting this new shrink wrap system in place soon.
We also try to keep our electrical and water use down which helps to keep the cost of the soap low and save the planet at the same time. We also recycle everything we possibly can in our office and soap shop. We are working hard to be green.

We have been busy creating some new soaps. We made patchouli citrus, bergamot, coconut/lime and lemon verbena, orange, warm vanilla sugar, amyris, petitegrain,and spearmint & orange. They smell great and are beautiful too. We will be addinig these new soaps to the website soon.

Today we got caught up on the inventory. We made several wonderful soaps which include: Orange, this is a new soap is smells just like a fresh orange. Next was Mango it has a great tropical scent. Another was one of our best sellers Vanilla and Geranium, it has a soothing and mellow fragrance. We also made Ginger and Geranium it is spicy and sweet, this is also one of our popular scents. And last but not least we made Freesia, a very nice delicate floral. There are some new fragrances in the works and they will be coming soon. Keep posted for new photos and more updates.

Have you read the ingredients of your soap lately? We read soap labels, a lot of soap labels. It's just one of the things we do. We want to know what other soap makers put in their soap. We were at our local drug store recently, and of course we had to read all of the soap labels. What we discovered was not so surprising, but still a bit of a shock. We read fifteen labels of soap manufactured by the big soap companies. Fourteen out of the fifteen manufacturers use sodium tallowate. What is sodium tallowate you ask? Sodium tallowate – is the result of combing sodium hydroxide with beef tallow. What this means is, when you use a soap with sodium tallowate it contains beef fat. Our soaps do not contain sodium tallowate. A lot of people buy soap in bulk at a cheap price, they usually buy it at the grocery store or drug store. The big soap manufacturers are not using quality ingredients in their soaps. They use the cheapest ingredients they can find. They take the glycerine out, ( which is very good for your skin) and sell it for other purposes. Our soaps have a high glycerine count, they are very moisturizing. Glycerine – is a naturally occurring sweet liquid in the soap making process. Glycerine is a humectant. It is a great moisturizer. You may think you are getting a good deal on soap when you buy it in bulk at a cheap price. But you are basically washing in beef fat, with lots of chemicals and inexpensive ingredients. Not only that but the soap manufactured by the big companies are not gentle on the skin. We use only quality ingredients in our soaps, and no chemicals and they are very gentle on the skin. Be good to yourself and the planet use natural soaps.
